A Man of Character

Since my last post was about a man with questionable character, I thought I would write today about a man of impeccable character.  This man lived a life of personal integrity and honesty, albeit  a simple one.  Money was never not a problem, but he solved it for his family by working three jobs at the same time.  He wasn’t one of those men who played golf on Saturdays, or went bowling on Thursday night.  He did, however, take his family fishing and to church on Sunday morning.  He told stories about the “good old days” and made homemade cinnamon rolls and Mickey Mouse pancakes.   He built  houses and trained dogs; and helped support a widow raising her two grandchildren.  It wasn’t the first widow he helped support.  His father died when he was just a little boy and he had to quit school and get a job to help support his mother and brothers and sister.  So, with a grade school education, he was one of the smartest men I’ve ever known.

He embodied all the values of virtue.  He taught his children by his example about the good life.  He loved his wife totally.  He loved all of God’s creatures as well and got much delight from being part of nature.  Of course he had a green thumb.  I’ve never seen someone who cut take a cutting from a plant, stick it in the ground, and watch it grow like he could.  It didn’t matter if you weren’t supposed to do it that way, he did, and it worked.

If you are wondering who this wonderful man was, he was Ira Clinton Preston.  My father.  My hero.  Today would have been his 88th birthday.  He is gone from this world now.  But the lessons he taught, the values he stood for, and the love that he gave so freely, all live on.

I love you Dad

I love you Dad

Letter That Questions Obama’s Character

I received an email that included a letter questioning Barack Obama’s character that I thought brought up some very good points. It’s a fairly long letter, so I am not going to copy it all on this post. However, I did find it online in a forum called Godlikeproductions and I really encourage everyone to read it and decide for themselves what they think about it.

14 Letter That Questions Obamas Character

The election is Tuesday. Make sure that you take the time to vote. If you don’t, you don’t have any right to complain about how the election turns out.

Can I Afford It? Let’s Ask Suze…

Okay, so if you are a Suze Orman fan, you know the routine.  People call into her show and ask her blessing to buy something they really want.  After going over their financial situation, Suze let’s them know if they have been approved or denied.  It really astonishes me at some of the situations, so I decided to write my own request to Suze to find out if I can afford to buy what I want.

Suze, I want to buy a new pair of Chic jeans.  Alco, the only local discount store, has them on sale for $11, but, of course, the plus size jeans cost $2 more.  I really need a new pair as my old ones are becoming stylishly worn and getting holes in them.  Besides, I have lost some weight so they don’t fit.  I know I didn’t lose enough to get into regular size jeans, so I will still have to pay the $2 extra for the plus size if I am approved.  So here goes.

I make less than $20000 a year working for a used car dealership which probably will end up going out of business because of the economy.  No one has any money to buy cars.  I have a savings account which has $150 in it.  I have a home mortgage for $26000 at 6% arm, which will adjust in 4 years.  I have $200 in credit card debt.  I have a car loan with a balance of $9,200 and a monthly payment of $320.  I am trying to sell the vehicle, but no luck so far.  Therefore, I also have to pay $49 a month for car insurance.  I do have a 403B from a previous job, which had about $5,000 before the stock market crash.

Suze, please….can I buy a pair of Chic jeans?

Traveling Made Easier for Plus Size Lady and Friend

As you know if you’ve read my Muses from the Mediterranean, I recently went on my first ever cruise.  We left Barcelona, Spain and made ports of call in France and Italy.  I totally loved cruising and traveling in Europe!  However, the trans-Atlantic flights were not my favorite.  Talk about uncomfortable.  I have found that flying when you’re plus size can be humiliating also when you are bigger than the seat and have to suck in and squeeze everything together to fasten the seat belt!  Or, you can always ask the flight attendant for a seat belt extension, so everyone around you can know.  You just know they have been taking bets on if the fat woman can fit in the seat!

But, now I have found at least one thing that I wish I had known about before those long, long flights.  They are called Cabin Cuddlers and I think if you travel often, you shouldn’t leave home without it.  Basically, they are a blanket and blow up pillow all in one that wraps around you and you can cuddle up in it to be snug as a bug in a rug.  Okay, enough of the cheap cliches!  Check them out.  They have special holiday pricing and fold up in an embroidered bag which will fit on the handle of your rolling suitcase.

Cabin Cuddlers will definitely make your next plane ride more comfortable.  But don’t just use it for traveling.  I plan to use mine for watching TV at home on the couch and save on the heating!

And for those of you who want to take their best friend traveling with them (aka Fluffy), you are in luck. Shop over 600 pet carriers to fit every style and budget at PetCarriers.com! Traveling Made Easier for Plus Size Lady and Friend. Pet Carriers.com caters to Man’s (or Woman’s) Best Friend and provides a safe and comfortable means for travel with your pets.
