It’s Your Fault … and My Take on Food Diaries

Well, you’ve fallen down on holding me to accountability! After all, it’s your fault that I haven’t stayed on the straight and narrow of my goals posted in my BetterMe post! So, here’s the rundown.

I have gotten more exercise, because I’ve been visiting in a hospital all week and we all know how many miles you can walk getting to and from places in a hospital.

Seems like I’ve lived on fast food for the last week, again, hospital thing. But, at least I have tried to get myself to really savor the experience of the french fries as I wolfed them down!

Completely fallen down on the drink more water thing. Can’t remember a single glass of water.

I’ve done okay on replacing negative self-talk with positive. Nothing jumps right out at me, so that must be good, right?

I have heard for years that in order to lose weight you need to keep a food diary. We’ve all heard it, haven’t we? But, I never could quite make myself do it. That fact in itself might explain why I am still a pleasantly plump Plus Size Lady!

But in exploring new blogs from my new friends in internet land, I came across an online food diary that makes it so easy that I have actually completed it for one day! What’s more, I found out that I didn’t do so bad on my eating yesterday (I didn’t go to the hospital yesterday, so no fast food!) The food diary is free online, but they do have a premium edition where you can transfer the info onto your computer. All you have to do is type in what you ate, ie hamburger, and they will give you several options. Choose the one that best describes what you ate and it will automatically add it to your diary. It will fill in the calories and percentage of fat of the food.

It’s kinda neat and entirely painless. I will try to keep it up. Of course, I was always told that “try” is the most negative word in the English language because you are automatically acknowledging that you might not do it or be able to do it!

So, “try” to have a great day today! I plan to do just that!

Twitter Friend Starts Betterme Program

A new friend of mine I met on Twitter @kellymccausey is the author of a great blog for work at home moms called Mom’s Resource Blog on Mom’s Talk Network. The whole site is full of great resources for moms (or other people) who work or want to work at home.

But Kelly posted 48 Days to a Better Me which really related to my posts on Oprah Confesses and So Do I and Is You New Year’s Resolution To Lose Weight?. What really hit home to me from Kelly’s article is that to accomplish your goal of weight loss, or any goal, you have to have accountability. You need a support group to keep you on track, recognize your progress, and help you get through the hard times.

She wants her followers on Twitter to do just that, and she invites everyone to join her on her program to a Betterme in 48 days. You can follow Kelly at Twitter @kellymccausey.

I am going to see what I can accomplish in those 48 days also. My goals will be:

    Get more exercise
Eat more healthy – no fast foods allowed
Drink more water – for me, any will be more :)
Replace negative self-talk with positive self-talk

If you want to hold me accountable or join me and Kelly, you may follow me here or on Twitter @carolelarkin. Please nag me and help me. I’ll do the same for you!

Oh, yeah. Here’s my badge……

Oprah Confesses, and So Do I

In the latest issue of her magazine, Oprah Winfrey candidly talks about her recent weight gain and medical problems. I just read the article “How Did I Let This Happen Again?” and in it, Oprah discloses that she has some of the same problems that face a lot of us Plus Size Ladies!

On one hand, it is nice to know that even with all of her money and resources, Oprah Winfrey faces the same struggle as we all do. But, I don’t wish ill to anyone who struggles with the issues of weight gain, self image, depression, and food addiction.

While those words above describe Oprah’s self-proclaimed problems, I think they are true for many plus size men and women. I know that I, personally, can identify with Oprah’s confessions of having food as her drug of choice. I know that I turn to food when my emotions are in turmoil. I know that I, too, felt a sense of relieve and rejoiced when my doctor told me several years ago that I had a thyroid condition. Finally, there was a legitimate reason for me being overweight!

Well, yes, there is a legitimate reason. In fact, there are several reasons. One of which is the fact that I have hypothyroidism. Thyroid problems run in my family, so it really was not a surprise to me to learn that I had problems also. To learn more about the role of your thyroid gland, here is a great resource for you.

Another legitimate reason that I am a plus size lady (sounds so much better than the medical term of morbidly obese, doesn’t it?) is that I am addicted to food. No, that doesn’t mean that I eat constantly. I don’t. In fact, I probably eat less than a lot of “average” people do. What that does mean is that I use food to satisfy emotional needs I have. Just as the alcoholic or drug addict use substances to control their emotions, I use food.

Weren’t we taught by our parents that food was a way to celebrate? After all, no family gathering is complete without all those “special dishes” that are associated with them. I even used food as a reward for my kids when they were growing up to celebrate good grades.

Even my ex-husband knows that if I say I am baking chocolate chip cookies that something is bothering me. I bake cookies to make me feel better. And, boy, do cookies right out of the oven make me feel better! At least, that is until they start upsetting my stomach after I have wolfed down about a dozen, just to get that feel good feeling! I promise, I am the original cookie monster. I will eat all of the cookies, just so they won’t be there anymore. I admit I have no willpower when it comes to fresh baked cookies. So, I’ve learned that I can’t bake cookies very often at all.

I guess what I am trying to say in this Plus Size Lady confession is that I need to figure out what need food is fulfilling for me besides nutrition. If I address that need and satisfy it in another way other than food, I think I will be well on the way to self-acceptance. Isn’t that where we all want to be?

So I wish Oprah all the best. I think she personifies the hopes, struggles, successes and failures of anyone who has struggle with a weight problem. Minus the millions and fame, of course!

Sleep Loss and Weight Gain – The Connection

In her article “Sleep Loss Contributes to Weight Gain”, Dr. Rallie McAllister reports results of recent studies linking not getting enough sleep with gaining weight.

She reports the study reveals a significant increase in appetite when you do not get enough sleep. This is very interesting and could help people understand that there is much more involved in loosing weight than diet and exercise.

Dr. McAllister also has a website Rallie On Health that is full of useful information and articles about health issues that affect everyone. She is a well know syndicated columnist and nutrition expert.

Check it out. Or perhaps, maybe you should sleep on it.
